Wildlife fear in Dehradun’s outskirts: Elephants and leopards enter villages, crops damaged, villagers demand safety

Villagers in Raiwala, a village close to Dehradun, are living in fear as elephants and leopards roam through streets and fields. Crops and property are being damaged daily, while residents demand stronger safety measures. The Forest Department faces criticism for not taking adequate action.

Dehradun: The movement of elephants and leopards in Raiwala has created panic among villagers. Herds of elephants are roaming from Haripurkalan to Jogiwalamafi, damaging crops and property, while leopards have been spotted entering homes and attacking pets. Residents say the situation has become unbearable and dangerous.

In the outskirts of Haridwar, Chhidarwala, elephants were seen roaming through neighbourhoods late at night. One elephant even came near the house of the village head and wandered through the streets for hours. CCTV cameras installed in nearby homes captured the animal’s movements, while villagers alerted each other over phone calls to avoid accidents. There are also the news from other parts of Uttarakhand of wildlife entering in colonies and agricultural fields.
